Rome, the capital of Italy, is a truly amazing city. There’s so much history and culture on offer in the historical centre of the city, yet this is also a vibrant and cosmopolitan place too, perfect for language travel and to study Italian abroad.

Where is Rome?


Rome is situated in central Italy, a little way inland from the western coast of the country. This is the largest city in Italy with a population of about 2.7 million people and it’s also the capital of Italy too. Rome, nicknamed the Eternal City, is on the Tiber River and although the city centre of about 24 kilometres (15 miles) inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea, the city suburbs spread all the way down to the coast.

Rome – City of Ancient History, Vatican City and the Colosseum


Rome is an ancient city, over 2500 years old and was the centre for the mighty Roman Empire. It’s amazing to think of all the history the city has seen, and during your Italian course in Rome you can experience all this history yourself! The Colosseum is one of the most famous structures in the world, but this is just one of the many spectacular things to see in Rome.

There’s also Vatican City, home of the Pope and beautiful and popular places with both language travel students and tourists, such as the Spanish Steps. Rome is also a very cosmopolitan city too and there’s great shopping, restaurants and nightlife here too, so plenty to keep you occupied when not studying hard at your foreign language school!

Italian Language & Cuisine in Rome


Although the language of Rome was originally Latin, the Italian language developed over a period of years in the Middle Ages and now Italian is very much the first language of Rome! When you study abroad in Rome you’ll be treated to some great cuisine. Pizza is always popular, but fish and pasta feature heavily too. There’s no Starbucks in Rome, but that’s because there are great local coffee shops instead!

Rome Has A Great Mediterranean Climate!


The Mediterranean climate of Rome means you get great summers here if you’re on a summer study abroad program with high temperatures in July and August of 31C (88F). If you’re attending a year round foreign language school the winters are very pleasant too with mild temperatures.
