I finally found what I was looking for.
I have been studying Spanish for five years and all this time I have been looking for the best ways to improve. Two years ago I decided to take classes with Spanish World Institute that was highly recommended to me by a friend. I am very happy that I found this school. The teachers are top notch with degrees in teaching languages, but also very friendly and they make classes a lot of fun. So much so, that after I returned back to my country, I decided to continue with their classes on line and two years later I am still looking forward to every next class. I learned so much, that now I feel very comfortable talking about any subject. I not only learned the language, but also the culture and how to think in Spanish. I recommend this school for students at any level very higly.

This school is perfect for learning Spanish!
This school is perfect for learning Spanish! I studied for 2 months. One month in Cartagena and one month in Bogota and loved every minute of it. Coming into it I knew no Spanish and did not know if I would want to continue learning Spanish afterwards, but now I definitely will! The teachers are very committed to the program and become your friends. At the guest house that I stayed at (arranged by the school) I met people that became very good friends of mine. I still talk to them. All in all I highly recommend this school. Whether it is only for a couple days or for 2 months like me, this is the place to learn.

      Unacceptable Abuse of Staff
The director is constantly yelling at the staff in front of the students: one episode that happened just today was the director yelling at our teacher for shutting the classroom door during his class, and then she proceeded to fire him during our lunch hour. It sounds like the Institute doesn\'t provide contracts for their employees, so they have no protection against workplace abuse. Personally, I plan to just hire a private tutor, which at 20,000 pesos an hour is far cheaper for the student, yet still pays the teachers far more than the 1,200 pesos they\'re paid at the Institute. I do not plan to pay one more peso to the Institute, and I hope others refrain too until the management starts providing contracts to its workers so Colombia\'s worker protections would apply.

      Fantastic teachers, terrible management
Let me preface this by stating that the teachers are wonderful. Very patient, very knowledgeable. It's a shame that the director doesn't respect them, because they are the only thing the school has going for it. The director often yells at the teachers, in front of the students or within earshot. I also witnessed her yelling at a student and threatening to kick them out for querying being overcharged. She is highly unprofessional. In regards to the classes, I was placed in a class with a group all more significantly advanced than I. I was an absolute beginner. It certainly hindered my learning and was frustrating for all involved, though the teachers were all wonderfully patient with me. Still, I didn't get as much out of the 2 weeks as I may have had I been in the correct class. In regards to accommodation, I stayed in the student apartment. It was lovely, but I found out while there that the director rented it out on AirBnb for half the price she charged us. We were ripped off. Also, they overbooked it one night and asked a student to vacate a day early, then refused to refund for the night. As she only accepts cash there is no recourse, and it seems once she has your money she doesn't care anymore. She forgets that the students are clients. I don't know whether it's greed or incompetence. If you have no dealings with her or nothing going wrong then you'd probably have a pleasant experience here with the teachers, but be warned, if things go wrong with the director prepare to be yelled at, and never refunded.

      great x
One of my colleagues was here last year (July 2014) and recommended the program. I looked into several schools and decided to give this school a try and I´m really glad I did. As a Spanish teacher, I look for schools (I´ve been to many) that are going to challenge me at my level. Due to the size of the school and the personal touch of the director and the teachers, they worked with me to have a great experience here. If you´re looking for a school, take a look at what they have to offer. While I was here in Colombia, I went to Cartagena (Getsamani) and stopped by the other branch of the school they have there. I got the impression that it is run with the same personal touch as the school in Bogota. In addition, the area where the school is located has a lot of life. So, overall it was very positve experience.

      2015 a lot has changed
After reading these reviews I must state that New World Institute in Bogota is not the same as in these old reviews. I do not want to be negative though I only want to warn you not to get trapped. I had attended only 2 days ending March 18, 2015 and realized that the director, also a teacher was completely disrespectful and dishonest with both her students and staff yelling at them at times. The environment was quite stressful. In the 2 days I attended my teacher who was excellent was fired, 2 students did not return because they were not happy. I had prepaid for a week and most of my tuition was not returned. One student had left the class room crying and the only other original student left in my class is leaving at the end of the week because he is dissatisfied. This sounds like too much to occur in 2 days but this all happened as I had witnessed it. Also beware they do not accept credit cards which means when they have your money you have no recourse. On a positive note the teacher I had was an excellent instructor. I had studied at several schools in Bogota for short periods of time but I chose this school because it was very close to where I was living. Please be careful, I was lucky I only got taken for about $130.00 but I spoke with several students at New World Institute who prepaid for several weeks and now are trapped or may potentially forfeit their tuition. I can recommend the following schools as I had attended them all and I did not experience anything similar to what I had mentioned above and they all accept credit cards: 1. Sergio Arboleda University 2. Universidad de La Saban 3. Escuela de Espanol Nueva Lingua. Check them out and do your homework. Good luck

      Highly Recomended
I had a good experience at the SWI and learned a lot in a short amount of time. In fact, I was shocked at how much I have learned in only one week. Additionally, the activities that we had during the week were a lot of fun and allowed us to see different neighborhoods within Bogota. The staff is extremely professional and are able to immerse you in the language. I definitely plan on taking more classes the next time I am in Bogota.

      Not for serious students
All of the professors are knowledgeable and very kind. The problem with this school is the lack of structure...they use photocopies from various books and you never know what material you will be covering each day. They also had a very tough time managing the different levels of the students and were very late every day.

      Buena Experiencia
The teachers at SWI are very professional and well educated. Of the three Spanish language schools I´ve attended (others in Central America), the teachers here are more highly educated and able to explain Spanish grammer rules much more efficiently than teachers at the other schools. Additionally, they are all extremely personable and professional. I have enjoyed my time here and feel that after two weeks, I have improved my Spanish speaking skills.

      Business Spanish
I met with Maria, the owner, to discuss about the potential options for individual courses. I was able to design the course and continuously adapt it to my needs for business level Spanish in Latin America. I had two different professors, interacted with other students, had the opportunity to participate in cultural activities and ultimately improve my Spanish. I recommend this school for people wanting to learn in an interesting manner.

      Spanish course
I attended a week long course at the Spanish World Institute in February 2012 and found the school to be well-organised and friendly. I already had some Spanish knowledge, and the course was adapted to my needs. I felt I improved a lot over the week and that this was due to the high standard of teaching. I´d definitely recommend this school.

      My experience of SWI
I have taken spanish classes in the evening in SWI and my experience in SWI was great. I was studing spanish as a part time student (betwen 2-6 hrs per week) as my work didn´t allow me to study spanish during the day. SWI was kind enough to accomodate me in their schedule. The quality of teaching in this institute is great, the professors give full attention to their students. I recommend this institute to anybody who would like to study spansih. Highly Recommended.

I arrived in Colombia in August 2011 to work in a project. Soon i realized that not only i need Spanish for my job, but also to interact and to enjoy my time here. SWI gave me a lot of help by teaching me the basics of the language for both my work and also to enjoy this amazing country. All the teachers are more than qualified and they were more than pacient with me. The classes were well balanced, covering all my need. I had a wonderfull time here at SWI i hope others will enjoy as well. Thank you!

      !!
My friend and I have been studying an intensive course at SWI for a little over a week, and the experience so far has been very exciting. Before we spoke barely enough Spanish to be polite tourists, let alone converse with people we met and experience the local culture in the way that we desired. But even after a week, we have learnt so much and our travels have been greatly enriched. The cirriculum is both rigorous and fun. The school is located in a central and safe neighbourhood, which is easily accessible by bus from Candelaria. The teachers are all very qualified and intelligent, as well as eager to help you get the most out of your travels. If I return to Colombia in the future, I hope that I will again have the opportunity to study here. Thank you!

      Spanish World Institute
SWI is a fantastic school. The course we did was structured to our needs and the amount of time we had available. We were in a class of two for two weeks doing an intensive course (30h per week). It taught us the most important aspects of the language for our travel, and we were very quickly able to have very rewarding conversations with locals. The school had a very friendly environment - the teachers had coffee with us during the morning breaks and were happy to give advice about things outside of the curriculum too. Highly recommended.

SWI has been extremely helpful in developing my language skills and making my time in Bogota enjoyable. This was the first time I had traveled alone out of the United States, and SWI has made the experience more comfortable by setting up a home stay with a wonderful family only two minutes from the school. I was very pleased with the progress I made in just one week. There is a great focus on grammar, but the most helpful part of the classes was the emphasis on conversation and speaking. I was very satisfied with my brief visit to SWI and Bogota and I highly recommend it to students.

      Review SWI
I spent 3 weeks learning Spanish at SWI on the intensive (30 hours per week) course. I found the teachers to be professional, patient, and adaptive to my learning needs. We studied a range of interesting and varied topics using a range of methods and materials which I found stimulating and helpful. The school is well located and the classes were small. However the school could benefit from a common room in which students can eat lunch (however, this is a minor thing as there´s lots of great places to eat nearby).

      Learning Spanish in SWI
The most poignant learning experience I had in Bogota was the culture; people and languange. SWI helped me assimilate with the country with learning the language quickly and, somewhat, effortlessly. The marriage of both the classroom setting and excursions activities richly enhanced my language learning experience. The teachers are very caring and have bounds of experience to impart knowledge in the best way to optimize learning. The only disadvantage I experienced was the unfortunate loss of a few such educators from the school due to, what I can only surmise as, administrative problems in the school. This being the only factor preventing me giving the highest rating for my experience. On the whole, I definitely recommend SWI to all. Cheers...

School is very well organized with excellent teachers, who are as well very helpful. Management is also very helpful and takes good care of students. They took me around and shew me some interesting neighbourhoods of Bogota which I really liked. The only thing is that I was not very happy with the accomodation that i was assigned. There was a last minute change and the house i ended up going to was too crowded, was noise and I had to share bathroom with too many people. It was not particularly clean either. I ended up going to a friend of a friend place where i ended up paying less for a much better room. However, the host family in both cases was very nice. It may just be that people with less money who are willing to rent live in less comfortable houses. In any case I suggest to watch out. Otherwise everthing was great.

I studied at the school for a month this summer and found that the price was much more affordable than other programs in the area. My experience was that the school had a strong focus on grammer, and I learned all the grammar rules I needed in order to start reading academic journals and books in Spanish without any help from anyone else. I very much enjoyed the program and would recommend it.

I found it very easy to make friends and the teachers showed me respect and- as I was placed into a class of students on my level- taught me at a steady pace that I could handle. The bi- weekly excursions also provided me with a chance to get to know the grand city of Bogota. I will be sad to go.

I spent a week at SWI taking private lessons and my only regret is that I had not done it sooner, and that I only spent one week in classes. My teacher, Roberto, was kind, patient and intelligent, while the rest of the staff was courteous and helpful. I suspect it helps to have a specific idea about what you want to learn (for instance, I knew I needed work with direct and indirect objects among other things). Overall, a great week.

The school is very well run but they are flexible and will do their best to attend to each student´s needs. Classes are small, which means a lot of personal attention and they will even offer private classes for the price of a group class, if there is no one else at your level. Jose Roberto, Helena and Nancy are wonderful teachers and great people. I highly recommend this school if you´re in Bogotá.

I am Swiss German living in Florida, and prior to Spanish (5 semesters at Univ. Florida) learned French, English, and Italian. During my visit to Bogotá last August I took classes at the Nueva Lengua, the school that shows up most in web searches. This time I decided to take classes at the Spanish World Institute (SWI) reason being it's a smaller school. Trying to be objective, I’d rate the quality of instruction the same. However, the flexibility of instruction and addressing the individual needs was clearly better at the SWl thanks to fewer students enrolled and smaller class size. The website and online exam made for a good 1st impression. The exam also gave a good self-evaluation. A surprise was what I received on my last day: No fancy yet useless certificate but an objective evaluation of my Spanish competency void of any flattery. This report was very detailed, extensive, and an honest assessment. To me this showed that the teachers keep track of progress, performance, and have an interest that a student actually learns and improves. My strength and weaknesses were clearly stated, advice was given how to to improve, and any teacher reading it will quickly be able to tailor further Spanish instruction. Extremely valuable! What impressed me at the SWI was the personal attention received. The interaction between students and teachers and/or administration was outstanding. I valued the 30 minute social break taken together at a nearby coffee shop. It allowed building personal relation ships among the students as well as between students and teachers. The help and advise I received about cultural & tourist places and events was beyond what I expected. I highly recommend this school.

Moreover, I loved the cultural field trips, where we were able to learn about the historic parts of Bogota and, of course, practice our spanish. I highly recommend this program.

Going to Colombia for a month, I had several options of places to take language lessons. I decided to go with SWI because of how professional the school seemed. I made the right decision. I don't think I could have learned Spanish faster than my time with SWI. I already spoke a bit of Spanish after years of classes in high-school and college. My classes at SWI have helped to solidify my Spanish where I can now comfortably say that I am intermediate level speaker and reader. Group Lessons: Although I paid for group-lessons, I was lucky enough to end up with private lessons because there were no other students at my level. Instructors: The instructors are world-class. Each one has a different personality that provides a perfect balance for learning. The instructors (Nancy, Jose Roberto and Helena) would accompany me to the book store to buy Spanish literature, to museums in Bogota to or take me out to lunch to help me practice and improve my Spanish. In other words, it was a completely immersive experience. Classes: The classes were filled with grammar in the morning (2 hours), culture (2 hours) in the afternoon with a possible field trip or more grammar or culture (2 hours). Weekend-trip: My favorite part of the two-weeks I spent with SWI was the school weekend trip we did to a colonial town called Villa de Levya. We went hiking, shopping, dancing and eating for three days. It was great. Meeting Colombians: Through the school, I made friends with Rolos (people from Bogota), something that is not easy to do as a traveler. This was the best way for me to practice my Spanish. Home-stay: Finally, the home-stay was a great decision, mostly because of the proximity to the school. I advise living in walking distance to the school. 6-Hours a day: Also, I took six hours of classes a day, which can be a bit too intense for some people and by the end of my two weeks proved to be quite intense for me too. In short, I cannot recommend SWI more strongly if you are interested in learning Spanish. Thank you Maria, Nancy, Jose Roberto and Helena.

SWI was a quick responder to email inquiries prior to starting the course. This was great, especially since I reserved a spot at the last minute. I took a one week course for four hours of instruction per day. Overall, this was a great learning experience and quite intensive as well. The classes were small (1-2 people in each) and we got quite a bit of individual attention. There were fieldtrips to museums, parks, and neighborhoods. SWI courses are tailored to each individual level so instruction was appropriate and enjoyable for me.

The teachers here are wonderful, and my homestay accomodation as well (a 2 minute walk! and because the Colombian family was hosting 3 other students, I got to know them all well and through the students, a multitude of other students and people here in Bogota). I looked at other schools - this one was simply the most professional and in the best location. The food here in Colombia is delicious, the nightlife unbeatable, and the people very friendly and happy! If you are considering studying Spanish in South America, I definitely recommend it. I have decided to study Spanish in a native country because I needed to rapidly improve my portunhol...usually Brazilians think that we have only to add IENDO at the end of every word, and there it is you´re speaking Spanish. Before choosing the country, I have talked to some friends that have been to Colombia before, and all of them told me that I would be surprised with the people and the place. And I must say...I am surprised! Bogota is a nice city, with a horrible traffic, but people are always willing to help, just like all latins. Choosing the school was not easy because the only tool I had was Google, but fortunally it was really helpfull. After finding SWI, I immediatly sent an email to Maria requesting for more information, and again, I was surprised on how quicky she responded. As I never took a course abroad, I can not say much about prices, but I believe that the price I paid was worth, each dollar. Teachers are simply fantastic, I had classes with Jose Roberto, Nancy and Luz... 3 different people, 3 different methodologies, 3 different background to make each class more interesting. Thank you all for helping me to improve my spanish skills, and for being around for all that was necessary. Special thanks to Maria who was so kind and helpfull all the time.

I have taken spanish language classes in the U.S., Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador and now I'm in Bogotá. (I'm a very slow learner!) I'm very picky about what kind of teacher I have and how the classes are set up. I always take one-on-one classes. Spanish World Institute is an excellent school. From my initial inquiries, Maria, the director, has been extremely responsive. We finally agreed on a schedule and I was surprised that the instructor they chose for me, Luz Helena, was pretty much exactly as I requested. It was a great fit. They actually listened to me! My class was a mixture of lessons, computer use and practice—my profe was very accommodating. All the staff and other instructors were friendly and accessible. The whole school was completely professional—rare in latin america. If there was one downside it would have to be the cost. In Bogotá, I think they offer the best prices, however all the schools in Bogotá are fairly expensive. That's the only reason I wouldn't give them 4 stars.
