What better place to study Russian abroad than the capital city, Moscow?! This large city is renowned for its fantastic architecture and culture and is a very wealthy city. Moscow is the capital and largest city of Russia and is situated in the west of the country. Moscow is in fact the largest city in Europe by metropolitan area and has a population of around 13 million people. Moscow has an excellent public transport system, making it easy for language travel students to get around the city. There’s a large metro system as well as passenger trains and three international airports here!
When you’re on your study abroad program in Moscow you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy all the amazing sights in this city too. Moscow is best known for the huge Red Square which includes the Lenin Mausoleum and the State History Museum. Also here is the stunning architecture of St Basil’s Cathedral which has a museum inside and was built in the 1500’s.
The Kremlin is another huge building worth visiting and there are many other museums too including the Pushkin museum and the Tretyakov Gallery. How about visiting Moscow’s most famous park, Gorky Park?!
Moscow is rapidly becoming a very cosmopolitan city and is popular with visitors from around the world. Language travel students will find that Moscow has great history and culture to offer yet it’s a very modern city too. As with the rest of Russia you will use Rubles as the currency here in Moscow.
As well as the arts and some great museums Moscow is very fond of its sports. Football (or soccer) is popular here and there are many sporting venues including ice rinks. Ice Hockey is also a very popular sport as is Basketball and Chess, so lots of opportunities when you study abroad in Moscow to go and watch some events!
Moscow’s humid continental climate means you’ll enjoy mild weather during the summer, June to August, when the average high temperatures range from 22C to 24C (72 – 75F). December to February are the coldest months when the average high is around -4 or -5C (23 – 25F), so winters are a little on the chilly side!
